Capital Ring Walkers

Status:Active, full but can join waiting list

When: Monthly on Saturdays

The Capital Ring traces its course through the leafiest suburbs of London. Over 70-odd miles, this orbital walking trail takes in parks, forests, cemeteries, docklands and residential streets, occasionally running into an unexpected obstacle, such as a canal or City Airport. The route was dreamed up by ramblers in 1990; today it's fully signposted and supported by Transport for London. Walking its length brings home both the sheer scale of the capital and the abundance of greenery nestled among its roads and buildings.

The Ring takes in many of London's leading attractions - for example, the Thames Barrier, Eltham Palace and Richmond Park - as well as overlooked gems such as Oxleas Meadows, the Parkland Walk and Abbey Mills Pumping Station, and gives a close-up view of the ever-changing Olympic Park.

There is a handy guide which divides the route into 15 sections, each starting and finishing at a public transport point, and is packed with a vast amount of information. This guide is not essential as the route is signed but I will have a guide book with me as I like to be reminded of the interesting places we see en route.

When:  a Saturday each month to be decided by the members .  (Come rain or shine the walk still goes ahead so please be prepared with suitable clothing.)
